Job Description

The Attorney General is the advisor of the Government in matters of law and legal opinion and a Constitutional Officer. Office, therefore, is the central legal service of the State, providing advice and draft legislation and supervising the conduct of litigation involving the State.gt;\r\n

Reporting to the Director General, the role of a Deputy Director General is to assist and advise the Attorney General in carrying out their function and involves a very wide range of legal work of major public importance. role encompasses advisory work and research in the fields of both domestic and international law, including the law of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights, participation in the formulation of law at domestic and international levels and advice on the conduct of litigation in which the State is involved.e will also be responsible for giving legal advice on legal issues arising from draft legislation and undertaking a third reading of legislation. Deputy Director General also appear before international courts and tribunals.gt;\r\n

The successful candidate will:
a have been called to the Bar and be enrolled as a Barrister in the State or have been admitted and be enrolled as a Solicitor in the State and have significant experience, which must involve court experience, as a practising Barrister
or practising Solicitor in the State so as to enable satisfactory discharge of the duties of the position, and
\r\n
b have practised as a Barrister or Solicitor in the State for not less than ten years.gt;\r\n
In addition, the successful candidate will:
- Have excellent analytical abilities and an excellent knowledge of legal principles and be able to express ideas clearly both orally and in writing.gt;
- Have sound judgement and the commitment and attention to detail that is required by most aspects of legal advisory work.gt;
- Have excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven high level of management and organisational skills.gt;
- Have a thorough knowledge ofsho w a Government law office operates.gt;\r\n
